The Long Museum West Bund that overlooks the Huangpu River in Shanghai where the coal loading wharfs once stood, has recently been completed by Atelier Deshaus The project has a cantilever, umbrella vault structure with seven self-bearing exposed concrete pillars while the shear walls are positioned at will and incorporated in the basement in order to interact with the original structural system.
Thanks to these walls the first underground car park floor has been transformed into a display space, whereas on the ground floor the different directions of the umbrella vaulting – that houses the structure's electrical and mechanical systems – highlights the multiple shapes of the different volumes. The materials used and the building's simplified contours produce an environment that unites strength with lightness. LED Primopiano spotlights have been used in all the rooms to create visual unity. These luminaires were chosen for their simplified form and a range of optics that offers both highly focused effects on the paintings on the walls and diffused, even lighting in the spaces reserved for installations.
