iGuzzini at the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice

Biennale di Architettura 2018

Innovative and efficient solutions for Biennale Architettura 2018

This year too, iGuzzini will take part in the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice, inaugurated on 26 May and open to the public until 25 November 2018. The current edition, curated by Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara (Grafton Architects), is titled "FREESPACE" and is dedicated to the theme of open, free spaces. The exhibition, held between the Giardini and the Arsenale, includes 71 participants.

A great supporter of the occasion, iGuzzini acts as technical sponsor for three installations within the FREESPACE set up by Grafton Architects, the Italian, the Irish, and the Mexican Pavilions. iGuzzini is also present within the United Arab Emirates Pavilion. iGuzzini’s lighting solutions – a perfect mix of high-energy-efficiency technology, innovative design, and attention to detail – also illuminate various spaces of the Arsenale.

THE INSTALLATIONS

Installation by Sauerbruch Hutton Architekten
The installation condenses the themes of the M9 museum in Mestre, designed by the Berlin-based studio, which will be inaugurated next December in a military area that has been inaccessible to the public for decades. With the new programmatic mix of functions, the museum will offer new possibilities, resulting from the synergy of cultural, social, and commercial activities. The installation is illuminated using Palco projectors.

Installation by Niall McLaughlin Architects
Niall McLaughlin Architects showcase six large architectural models displayed using a rotating table. Dimmable RGBW LED luminaires simulate the passage of the sun, from dawn to dusk, changing the colour temperature, intensity, and angle of the light beam, demonstrating the remarkable opportunities that biodynamic light offers to architecture. Their installation is illuminated using Platea Pro luminaires.

The Pavilions

Italian Pavilion 'Arcipelago Italia', curated by Mario Cucinella

Arcipelago Italia. Projects for the future of the country’s territories is a reflection on contemporary issues such as urban periphery, the earthquake aftermath, brownfields, railways, and mobility. The Crater and Camerino including the area of Central Italy hit by the 2016 major earthquakes, are among the five strategic areas identified. The goal is to help define the architectural opportunities available in the different areas and outline a future vision for the country. The pavilion consists of two areas: a first brim, which displays eight large photographic books about eight national circuits; a second brim consists of five wooden tables of project proposals illustrating possible future scenarios. Palco, Tecnica Pro, Underscore 15, Front Light, and iPlan Easy luminaires illuminate the Pavilion.

Irish Pavilion 'Free Market', by Miriam Delaney, Jo Anne Butler, Laurence Lord, Tara Kennedy, Orla Murphy, Jeffrey Bolhuis.
Free Market aims to underline "the generosity, humanity, and possibilities" offered by the Irish market towns. The six designers investigate the important role that markets play for Irish rural communities, which are still prevalent in the country (only one in three Irish people live in the city). The exhibition invites visitors to reappropriate these common spaces, the economic and social hubs of rural Ireland, and re-imagine them as places where people meet to socialise. iPro, Laser Blade (10/5 cells), Front Light, Underscore 15, and Mini Reglette luminaires illuminate the space.

Mexican Pavilion 'Echoes of a Land', curated by Gabriela Etchegaray
Echoes of a Land presents the geography and imaginary space of Mexican architecture as an aesthetic translation of the land that defines us as people: a territory of permanent contrasts and vulnerabilities. The exhibition introduces a complex and fertile region, leveraged and enriched by architectural practice that gives shape to sublime scenarios. Through a portrayal of murals, the exhibition draws visitors into the Echoes of a Land, through examples of a vulnerable and contrasting reality, in a country that needs to tackle both poverty and education issues, as well as raise awareness of quality architecture. The space is illuminated using Palco and Palco Low Voltage. iGuzzini is also involved in the United Arab Emirates Pavilion, one of the countries participating in the Architecture Biennale for the first time.

United Arab Emirates Pavilion 'Lifescapes beyond Bigness', curated by Khaled Alawadi
Lifescapes beyond Bigness explores the interplay between the physicality of architecture and places, and the dynamic choreography of everyday life. The pavilion particularly investigates the role of ‘quotidian’ landscapes in accommodating, enhancing, and facilitating ‘everyday’ social activities. The exhibition aims to explore their physical characteristics and typologies; the behavioural rhythms of life; and the design traditions that have shaped them, inviting visitors to experience important landscapes which are often overlooked in common perceptions of the United Arab Emirates’ mega-development discourse. Palco projectors illuminate the Pavilion.
