Dean Skira

Lighting designer

Dean Skira is the founder of Skira, an award-winning lighting design practice based in Pula, Croatia with projects worldwide. For the past 30 years, Skira is building and creating mostly with intangible forms. In 1986 he relocated to the United States to study lighting design and interior design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York, NY. In 1990 he established his first lighting design firm in the United States before returning to Croatia in 1995. Dean is a published author and a frequent guest lecturer. Some of his notable works like Eurasia tunnel, Cikat bay and Lighting Giants Skira received international lighting design awards (IALD, IES, Architizer, LDA, Illumni Infinity, Codega), as product designer for lighting instruments Trick and Lun-up (Red Dot, LDA, Lux Award, Blueprint, iF Award, ADI Index, Delta of Gold, ARC Show) and as an investor for his office building the House of Light (Dedalo Minosse Prize). He is a member of IALD (International Association of Lighting Designers), Illuminating Engineering Society of North America (IESNA), the Croatian Designers Society (HDD), the Croatian Lighting Association (HDR), and was also a member of the Professional Lighting Designers’ Association (PLDA).

Trick

"The idea of Trick came from a desire of having the beam of light under control. To clarify that, I just wanted to have a continuous straight line of light. I began with the light effect, what kind of an effect would I like to achieve in a given space. I wanted a linear straight line which doesn’t escape uncontrollably, because the nature of light is difficult to control. I draw the effect, and with iGuzzini, we developed the technological part of this lighting instrument and we have it today."

"The idea of Underscore actually came from an angle we built in our office building. We wanted to separate two walls and create a subjective feeling of weightlessness of that wall so in architecture there has been a long time a discussion about the connection between the surfaces within the architecture (the connection between the wall and the ceiling, the floor, and the wall..) so it’s the angle, it a discussion about the angle. Some architects are trying to dissolve that angle in a certain way. So the idea of Underscore is cutting the angle, eliminating the angle within two solid forms."
